Is It Risky to Book a Holiday to the Caribbean in Summer?

We get asked this question A LOT! Having travelled to Barbados, Saint Lucia and Grenada in July and August, our decision on this would be easy – come and stay!

In more than 10 summer stays, only once in August 2020 did we get heavy rain. There was a tropical depression in the area resulting in 3 days of on/off heavy rain (although the sun would appear at intervals). We made the most of the sports and spa facilities, enjoyed long games of cards with endless rum punches and finished our books, as we were there for 10 nights it wasn’t a big deal. And after rain, the sun comes skipping happily out for days on end.

Not only will hotel prices be at their lowest, the beaches are quieter and hotels are at lower occupancy giving a more personalised experience. Yes, it might rain, but usually only for a short sharp shower. It is more humid though so those with curly hair beware! Weather patterns across the world have changed and the Caribbean region is no different. Whilst temperatures remain similar year-round, we do see some rain now through all months of the year, summers months are drier than they used to be and its no unusual now to get a shower in Jan/Feb.

Will there be a hurricane? Tropical storm and hurricane warnings typically happen between June-October, however these often change course and very rarely result in anything more than rain. Barbados was last hit directly in 1955. In the past 37 years, only one hurricane affected Saint Lucia directly, in 2010. In 2017, hurricane Maria as a category 2 storm, passed north of Saint Lucia with minimal impact. The risk of a hurricane hitting St. Lucia is the same as the risk in New York.

If bad weather did happen, the hotels have excellent in-house procedures and rainy-day plans in place and if you have booked your holiday with a Tour Operator then they will look after any changing travel arrangements for you.

We will always choose the less busy, cheaper time of year to visit this beautiful part of the world!
